Whether or not your first consultation with your family lawyer is free, you can make best use of your, and your lawyer's, time by coming well prepared. You can save time and money by providing as much information as possible at your initial consultation.

The following information will help your family lawyer assess your case and give you initial advice about your options, rights and obligations:

* Length of marriage, date of separation, previous separation, whether or not you entered into a pre-nuptial or other agreement and, if so, a copy of the agreement.

* Details of spousal or child support obligations related to any previous relationships or marriages.

* Number and ages of your children, school grades and progress, day to day arrangements for the care of the children during the marriage and any special needs or expenses for the children.

* Your, and your spouse's, age, education, occupation, income for the last three years, place of employment, education, economic prospects and any special needs or disabilities.

* A list and estimated value of the family's assets including: your family home and furnishings, pensions, RRSPs, chequing and savings accounts, investments, vehicles and recreational equipment or property.

* A list of family and personal debt.

* If you are not yet living separate from your spouse, an estimate of the family's monthly income and expenses; if you are living separate from your spouse, an estimate of the family's monthly income and expenses before the separation and an estimate of your (and the children's, if applicable) monthly income and expenses since the separation.

* Copies of any court orders or agreements concerning your current marriage or relationship.

* Any questions you may have.
